Super Juice

Super Juice
INGREDIENTS
  • 4 Apple
  • 1 large cucumber
  • 1 tsp spirulina
  • 1 tsp msm
  • 1 cup of water (blender use only)
Makes about 40 oz

Put the cucumber and apples in your juicer ... and juice them!

No juicer? No problem! Put them in your Vitamix. Then strain through a nut milk bag or a paint strainer bag...and pour in your storage container. For detailed instructions on making juice in the blender click here.

After juicing, pour back into your blender and add the spirulina and msm. Blend a little until the powders are dissolved. Then drink.

Cucumbers:  Cucumber peel is a good source of dietary fiber that helps reduce constipation, and offers some protection against colon cancers by eliminating toxic compounds from the gut. It is a very good source of potassium, an important intracellular electrolyte. Potassium is a heart friendly electrolyte; helps reduce blood pressure and heart rates by countering effects of sodium. It contains unique anti-oxidants in good ratios such as beta-carotene and α-carotene, vitamin-C, vitamin-A, zea-xanthin and lutein. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes. Cucumbers have mild diuretic property probably due to their high water and potassium content, which helps in checking weight gain and high blood pressure. Spirulina: Spirulina is the common name given to a family of blue-green algae produced by a class of cyano-bacteria called “Arthospira”. It is abundant in both fresh and sea water. Spirulina benefits come mostly nowadays as a type of dietary supplement that comes from a type of microscopic alga, which is shaped like a spiral coil. Spirulina is cultivated from all around the world and is used as a dietary supplement as well as a whole food available in tablet, flake and powder form. One of the most important of all spirulina benefits is that it has an unusually high amount of protein, which is an almost complete protein that contains 18 of the 22 amino acids the body needs. It is of a superior quality when compared to plant protein. It is also rich with several different types of essential fatty acid, and contains Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and Vitamin E. It is also a source of such minerals as potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium (selenium benefits), sodium, and zinc. The most important and popular spirulina health benefit that comes with regular supplementation is undoubtedly weight loss. Spirulina weight loss has become quite a popular diet food; it is natural, it has all the major vitamins, amino acids and nutrients required by the human body and it has a very high protein content (60-70% of its body weight is pure protein). It is also free of carbohydrates and sugar. As a result, it acts as a potent appetite suppressant reducing body weight over time. Of course, if you are using spirulina weight loss as a magic pill remedy it will not work by itself but it should help you in diminishing your hunger while eating a completely natural food. It has also been shown to help correct anemia for undernourished children, it also be effective against melanosis and keratosis caused by chronic arsenic poisoning. Spirulina is also found to protect against hay fever, reduce inflammation caused by arthritis. Also, another one of the spirulina benefits is that it is a rare source of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) which is otherwise only present in mother’s milk. This particular amino acid helps reduce bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It also improves cardiovascular health in general. Spirulina is known to help contain the effects of type 2 diabetes. Regular Spirulina supplementation is known to lower blood sugar levels. It also improves the antioxidant potential in people, which decreases muscle breakdown and exhaustion after exercising and improves overall health. However despite all these benefits their are a few (mostly minor) spirulina side effects you might want to learn more about in my other post. However, the only real side effect you probably have to worry about is that spirulina also contains an amino acid called, phenylalanine, which should be avoided by people with phenylketonuria, a metabolic disorder, which prevents the body from metabolizing this particular amino acid, making it to build up in the brain causing damage. And although very rare it may sometimes contain a type of toxin called microcystins, which can cause liver diseases, including cancer. Unfortunately, as of yet no standard exists to regulate its safety, however as mentioned it is an extremely rare toxin, so as long as properly tested there is no need for an alarm. As you can see theirs definitely a lot of benefits linked to spirulina so it might be a supplement you want to add to your diet when looking for the best multivitamin that can compliment your eating habits!

Dandelion Juice

Everyone has seen dandelions, right? I remember being a little girl pulling the dandelion leaves from the yard and throwing them away. Now I'm paying for my dandelion greens. Funny how life works sometimes right? I once had them for free, now I have to pay for these little green babies. I managed to finally make a juice that works with dandelion. Dandelion greens are strong and bitter, so its best to mask them with something that's sweet to completely cover the taste of them, without taking away the nutrient factors. So here's what I did...
Dandelion Juice

INGREDIENTS
  • 3 cups of dandelion greens
  • 1 large cucumber
  • 4-5 apples
  • 1 cup of water (for blender use only)

Put it in your juicer ... and juice it!

You taste the melon flavor from the cucumbers but you also taste the apple flavor...and yes you do taste the dandelion. So if you don't want to taste the dandelion at all, you might want to add more apples and maybe even more cucumber.

Mintini

Mintini 
INGREDIENTS
  • 1/4 cup mint leaves
  • 2 limes (peeled)
  • 2 tbsp raw blue agave
  • 24 ounces of coconut water
Makes about 28 ounces

Take the limes and mint leaves, put them in the Vitamix blender blend then run through a nut milk bag to strain the mint leaves and lime pulp. Then pour the mixture back into your blender and add the coconut water and raw blue agave and you have a Mintini!

It's a light refreshing little elixir that when poured in a martini glass made me feel special.  It's minty and not overbearingly sweet, with just the right amount of lime. Not to mention its good for you. Check out the health benefits below.

TIP: I know it sounds silly but play with your glasses sometimes, it makes it so much more fun! Buy some different styles of glasses and put your smoothies and juices in them. It's fun to change things up.

Some Health Benefits

Coconut Water: Coconut water is a very refreshing drink to beat tropical summer thirst. The juice is packed with simple sugar, electrolytes, and minerals to replenish hydration levels in the body. Research studies suggest that cytokinins (e.g., kinetin and trans-zeatin) in coconut water showed significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-thrombotic effects. Coconut water has been generally offered to patients with diarrhea in many tropic regions to replace fluid loss from the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the need for intravenous therapy. The osmolarity of tender coconut water is slightly greater than that of WHO recommended ORS (Oral Rehydration Therapy) osmolarity. Presence of other biological constituents like amino acids, enzymes, minerals, and fatty acids may account for this higher osmolarity. However, unlike WHO-ORS, its water is very low in sodium and chlorides, but rich in sugars and amino acids. This well-balanced fluid composition with much needed calories would be an ideal drink than any other brand of soft drink beverages in dehydration conditions. Coconut water is composed of many naturally occurring bioactive enzymes such as acid phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, diastase, peroxidase, RNA polymerases etc. Altogether, these enzymes aid in digestion and metabolism. Despite very light consistency, its water has much better composition of minerals like calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc than some of fruits like oranges. (Compare mineral composition of oranges). Its water is also a very good source of B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates. These vitamins are essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish. Coconut water contains a very good amount of electrolyte potassium. 100 ml of water has 250 mg of potassium and 105 mg of sodium. Together, these electrolytes help replenish electrolytes deficiency in the body due to diarrhea (loose stools). In addition, fresh coconut water has small amount of vitamin-C (ascorbic acid); provides about 2.4 mcg or 4% of RDA. Vitamin C is a water-soluble ant-oxidant. 
 
Lime: Like all citrus fruits, limes and their juice are very high in vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant nutrient. It supports immune system function and helps protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. There are disease-fighting compounds found in citrus fruits, such as limes and lemons, known as limonoids. According to the U.S. Agricultural Research Service, your body can readily absorb and use a specific, long-acting limonoid called limonin. Limes and lemons contain almost as much limonin as they do vitamin C. This compound, in a culture study, published in "Nutrition and Cancer" in 2001, as well as in laboratory studies on human and animals cells, as noted in a June 2003 article in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry," has been shown to induce cancer cell death and may be particularly beneficial for protecting against cancers of the skin, breast, mouth, lung, colon and stomach. 
 
Raw Blue Agave: According to Dr Ray Sahelian, bestselling author of, Mind Boosters and The Stevia Cookbook, there are several hundred species of the agave plant. Agave has been cultivated for centuries, first by the Native American population and then in Europe, when agave plants were brought back by the Spaniards and Portugese in the 17th century. Agave contains saponins and fructans. According to Dr. Sahelian, saponins, which are found on quinoa and many plant roots, including ginseng, have anti-inflammatory and immune system-boosting properties, including antimicrobial capability. In fact, the Aztecs used agave syrup to treat wounds because of its antibacterial properties. Inulin is a type of fructan or fiber that has many health benefits. Studies suggest that inulin can be effective in weight loss because of its low impact on blood sugar (that's right! this is a great sugar substitute for those with diabetes) and its ability to increase satiety and decrease appetite. Inulin is also associated with lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of certain cancers, and increasing the absorption of nutrients, such as isoflavones, calcium and magnesium. In addition, Dr Sahelian says fructans are not destroyed in the stomach and may be a delivery system for drugs to treat colon diseases such as ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease. 
 
Mint Leaves: Because of its active compounds contained, mint has sedative, disinfectant and cicatrizing properties. It can be successfully used in gastro-intestinal disorders; it helps the liver and calms indigestion. It contains menthol, menthone, menthofuran, a-pinene, limonene, cardinene, acetic aldehide, isovaleriana, vitamin C and antibiotic substances. Because of its menthol, mint has a very good action over the digestive system, causing a small anesthesia of the gastric mucous membrane. It also stimulates digestion. Mint can treat diarrhea, gastric fever or toxic infections. It stimulates the biliary secretion and helps the digestion of fats. It is recommended in cases of asthma, bronchitis and the flu because of its antispasmodic and sedative properties. Sinusitis can be treated with mint also, because menthol is a vasodilatator of the nasal mucous membrane. It can be used as an inhalation in small amounts as well as for chest massages. Mental fatigue, stress, depressive states and headaches can be ameliorated if mint oil is applied over the temples and backhead. Mint oil is a powerful stimulant and tonic. Mint is recommended for the treatment of rheumatism, for disinfection of the oral pocket and in cases of ear inflammation. Due to the fact that it has an antibacterial action it can cure acne and blackheads.

Island Kale Smoothie

This smoothie is one of my favorite smoothies to make when I'm in a rush and on the go. So here's what I do...

INGREDIENTS
  • 4 cups of frozen kale
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1/2 chopped pineapple
  • Then I add either 1-2 cups of coconut water or coconut milk. (Depends on if I want a milk shake taste or a less heavy taste to it-today I opted for coconut water.)

Throw them all in the Vitamix Blender!

Blend for about a minute or two. Notice I don't add any ice. Because I pre-clean, chop and bag my ingredients and freeze them, they are "smoothie ready" and I don't need ice or anything else! Just pure ingredients! (for a look inside my refrigerator to see how I stay organized click here) And...VOILA!!! You have green smoothie!!!
Now I have 55 ounces of pure yumminess to take with me on the go! Now I know you're wondering how is she going to carry all of that around...I know...I know. Here's one thing you'll learn about me...I'm a "LESS IS MORE" kind of gal! So here's what I do...

I throw everything that was in that blender into this kanteen! It's stainless steal on the inside and out. It keeps it cool and guess what, I ordered a 40 oz kanteen container. However, it actually holds 50 oz! So its compact, convenient and holds a lot! This is about 2 meals and I can carry it with ease on the go! Now of course you don't have to use this, use any type of storage container you like. But this is what works for me! Hope this inspired you to make smoothies to go!

Pineapple: is a fruit that contains a proteolytic enzyme bromelain that digests food by breaking down protein. Bromelain also has anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting and anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown that consumption of pineapple regularly helps fight against arthritis, indigestion and worm infestation. Fresh pineapple is an excellent source of antioxidants and vitamin C. Vitamin C is required for the collagen synthesis in the body. Collagen is the main structural protein in the body required for maintaining the integrity of blood vessels, skin, organs, and bones. Put it in your juicer ... and juice it! 

No juicer? No problem! Blend in your Vitamix. Then strain through a nut milk bag or a paint strainer bag...and pour in your storage container. For detailed instructions on making juice in the blender click here

I thought this was a great switch from apples...so I used pears! It doesn't mask the strong collard taste as good as the apples do, so you do taste the collard flavor a little bit in this, but its not a bad taste. It's sweet and good!

  • 1 prickly pear
  • 1-2 cups of pineapples

  • 1 apple

Makes 45-50 oz 

Put everything in your Vitamix blender and blend into a juicy smoothie perfection! 

This tastes like Tutifruiti. There's just no other way to describe it. You guys remember that fruity candy like flavor? That's what it tastes like. I was so close to adding "fresh and fruity" on the end! *smile* The mixture of the fruits along with the prickly pear is just great. I was going to make this into a juice, but opted to leave it as a smoothie, after I saw how it turned out and tasted.  Now it does have a little bit of seeds in it, from the prickly pear, but its not unbearable. The texture of them  reminds me of chia seeds.

(1) If you don't like the consistency of the seeds you can always juice the prickly pear and then add it as your liquid base.
