Spicy Chili Flax Crackers

Spicy Chili Flax Crackers
INGREDIENTS
1 cup of flax seeds
1.5 - 2 cups of water
1/2 cup chili powder
1/2 tsp celtic sea salt
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder

MAKING THE FLAX CRACKERS
  • Let the flax seeds soak in water for at least 6-8 hours.
  • After soaking, the flax seeds should have gotten a little thick and gooey in the water, stir it. Add your seasonings. Stir some more.
  • Pour in your dehydrator trays into thin layers. Not too thin, you should NOT be able to see through your flax mix. But not too thick, this isn't bread! It's a cracker, so spread evenly.
  • Dehydrator on 115 degrees for about 6-8 hours.
  • About halfway through, I flip the crackers. (Only flip if your crackers appear to be hard on top. If its moist on the parchment paper, that's perfectly fine.)
  • After I flip my crackers I peel the parchment paper off the back and I cut them when they are halfway done. This makes it less "breakable" and easy to manipulate into the shapes and sizes I want them to be.
  • Let them un-cook for about another 3-4 hours (or so). You'll know when they are done: (a) the color will be a dark red; (b) it will look like a chip; (c) the crackers will have a slight bend on the edges to them; and, (d) when you bite into it (or break it in half) it will have the consistency of a cracker or a chip with crisp!

Yes, making crackers is this easy. I started making my own when I went to the store one day and paid $5.99 for a 40z box of flax crackers that didn't have any flavor to them and were stale! Ha! I realized then, that I could do better, and you can too. Who was that who said eating raw was expensive? This cost me about $2.00 to make, and I have far more than 4oz.

I'd love to know how you enjoy the taste of these? These are actually one of my favorite crackers to make, because no matter what, they are simple. Guess what? It has a good shelf life! I make these often and keep them in zip lock baggies in my pantry. Try not to eat them all in one sitting! LOL Be nice, share with your friends!

TIP
  • I typically put my flax seeds on the counter top to soak, but you can also soak them in the refrigerator should you choose.
  • When cutting your crackers you can use kitchen shears or a pizza cutter. I often use kitchen shears, because its easier to me.
  • Line your dehydrator with parchment paper. It makes life really simple...and clean up too. *wink*
